Gately Rotary Club History

Initial meetings were held at the instance of Gately Rotary Club.

The Club was chartered at a dinner towards end November 1970.

The Charter President was Dickie McLaren and the first secretary was Cedric Vice. Both of them were members of the East London Rotary Club and they transferred their membership to Gately to take up these positions.

Initially there were + 22 members. The surviving Charter members are Godfrey Radloff and John Fletcher.

Initially the Club meetings were held at the Deals Hotel on the corner of Buffalo and Terminus streets. After some years the venue was changed to the Windsor Hotel overlooking the harbour mouth. From there they moved to the old Kings Hotel where they stayed until the hotel was closed. Initially lunches cost R2-50.

Early fund raising ventures included Premiere's of plays being presented at the Guild Theatre.

Early projects included painting a dormitory at the Malcomess Home and painting the NSRI clubhouse.
